Surgeons in New Delhi have successfully performed the world’s first ACL reconstruction surgery using the Apple Vision Pro.
The surgery, led by ACL expert Dr Manu Bora, included reconstructing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) and repairing the meniscus of a 33-year-old male patient.
The Apple Vision Pro, the advanced augmented reality (AR) device, offered an unparalleled 3D view of the patient’s anatomy. It allowed Dr Bora and his team to navigate the intricate structures of the knee with exceptional clarity and precision.
The integration of this technology facilitated highly accurate surgical performance, minimising risks and significantly enhancing patient outcomes.
Co-founder of healthcare provider Pristyn Care, Harsimarbir Singh said: ‘Integrating Apple Vision Pro into orthopaedic surgery marks a significant leap forward in our mission to innovate in healthcare. We are proud to spearhead such crucial advancements, setting new standards and delivering care to our patients. Our unwavering focus on leveraging cutting-edge technology and fostering innovation ensures we provide the best possible outcomes and experiences for those we serve.’
This procedure is part of the company’s ongoing commitment to adopting innovative healthcare technologies. Earlier this year, it made headlines by performing the first-ever Apple Vision Pro-assisted bariatric surgery.
Dr Manu Bora said: ‘By using Apple Vision Pro in complex surgeries, we’re entering a new era of surgical accuracy and better patient outcomes. This advanced AR technology is changing the future of healthcare.’
In May, Pristyn Care, in partnership with Mohak Bariatrics and Robotics, performed the world’s first live bariatric surgery using the Apple Vision Pro. Dr Mohit Bhandari, a leading bariatric and robotic surgeon, led the surgery, which included a sleeve gastric bypass and a single anastomosis duodenal-ileal (SADI) procedure.
Dr Bhandari emphasised the importance of this breakthrough. He said: ‘The successful use of Apple Vision Pro in these complex procedures opens up new possibilities in surgical precision and patient outcomes. We are proud to lead the way in integrating advanced AR technology into medical practice.’
Previously, Surgeons at London’s Cromwell Hospital incorporated the Vision Pro into an operation for the first time in the UK.
Led by consultant orthopaedic spinal surgeon Syed Aftab, the surgical team successfully repaired a patient’s spine.
