Combining AI, 3D reconstruction, and VR is transforming how complex surgical procedures are planned and carried out within Spain’s public health system.
At the forefront of this initiative is the University Hospital Son Espases in Palma de Mallorca, a nationally recognised institution renowned for its advancements in cancer surgery.
Led by Dr Álvaro García Granero, a distinguished surgeon renowned for his pioneering contributions to medical innovation, this programme has developed a methodology that allows surgical professionals to rehearse operations before entering the operating room.
Dr García Granero draws a compelling analogy: ‘If Formula 1 drivers simulate the circuit before a race, why should we not do the same in surgery?’
The initiative began with the generation of 3D anatomical models derived from imaging tests, such as MRI scans.
The application of AI in medical imaging facilitates the automatic creation of 3D reconstructions, wherein each organ is represented with millimetric precision.
Dr García Granero said: ‘This allows us to explore the patient’s anatomy as one would navigate Google Maps, but for the human body.’
Integrating these models into virtual reality environments has led to considerable clinical progress.
Studies focusing on colon and rectal cancer demonstrate a marked reduction in surgical times, an increase in minimally invasive procedures, and improved oncological outcomes.
Notably, Son Espases has attained a 0% rate of affected margins in colon cancer surgeries, which starkly contrasts with the international average of 10%.
This technological integration enables the hospital to accept previously inoperable cases, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration and resulting in more precise, less invasive surgeries.
EuroWeekly reports that Luis Alegre, director of innovation and projects at Son Espases, was looking forward to the Salut Innova 2025 awards ceremony, which celebrates talent and creativity in the healthcare sector. This year, 26 projects were submitted – a figure that reflects the ‘dynamism of the Balearic health innovation ecosystem’.
