Aimed at bolstering surgeon independence and optimising surgical workflows, the Da Vinci 5 is the culmination of more than a decade of research, design and development to revolutionise robotic-assisted surgery.
Building upon the highly acclaimed Da Vinci Xi system, utilised in over seven million procedures worldwide, Da Vinci 5 introduces more than 150 enhancements.
These include:
• Enhanced accuracy and precision, facilitated by new surgeon controllers and advanced vibration and tremor controls
• State-of-the-art 3D display and image processing capabilities, providing surgeons with unparalleled visual clarity and supporting future advancements in surgical imaging technology
• Unique force-sensing technology, enabling surgeons to perceive subtle forces exerted on tissue during procedures
• Streamlined workflow enhancements designed to increase surgeon autonomy and optimise surgical teams' efficiency.
Da Vinci 5 boasts expanded computing power, paving the way for innovative system capabilities and advanced digital experiences, such as integration with Intuitive’s My Intuitive app and virtual reality simulation.
The system also prioritises surgeon comfort with a redesigned console offering customisable positioning, ensuring optimal ergonomics for prolonged surgical procedures.
Initially available to select US customers with established robotic surgery programmes, Da Vinci 5 will undergo further evaluation and refinement before a broader commercial rollout.
Gary Guthart, CEO of Intuitive Surgical, renowned for its pioneering work in robotic-assisted surgery and its leadership in minimally invasive healthcare, expressed his delight at the FDA clearance.
He emphasised the company’s commitment to advancing surgical practices to improve patient outcomes and enhance patient and medical team experiences.
Myriam J Curet, chief medical officer at Intuitive Surgical, affirmed the company’s commitment to customer feedback and continuous improvement, underscoring their dedication to meeting the evolving needs of surgeons and hospitals worldwide.
‘We intend to launch da Vinci 5 more broadly in the US and globally after we learn from and directly work with an initial smaller number of customers.’
The first users include health systems with ‘mature robotic surgery programmes’ that also worked with the company during the machine’s development.
Da Vinci 5 joins Intuitive’s line-up of surgical systems, including the multiport systems Da Vinci X and Da Vinci Xi and the single-port system Da Vinci SP.
With a steadfast commitment to innovation and customer-centric design, Intuitive Surgical is poised to shape the future of robotic-assisted surgery for years to come.
