Saudi Arabia’s King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSH&RC) has announced the successful completion of 400 robotic cardiac procedures with an impressive 98% survival rate.
The hospital highlights that robotic procedures’ minimally invasive nature has reduced hospital stays by more than 50%.
KFSH&RC is the only hospital globally performing robotic cardiac surgery on children.
Since the inception of its Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program in February 2019, KFSH&RC has reported significant improvements in patient outcomes compared to traditional surgical methods.
These advancements include reduced blood transfusions and shorter durations of mechanical ventilation, contributing to faster recovery times and fewer complications.
Overall healthcare costs decreased by 40% compared to conventional methods and patients could resume their day-to-day lives quickly.
The Robotic Cardiac Surgery Program has been at the forefront of the hospital’s medical innovation, successfully performing various complex cardiac procedures.
These include robotic multi-valve operations, aortic valve replacements and other intricate surgeries. The Program began with 105 procedures in its first year and has rapidly evolved to encompass 400 successful operations.
This milestone solidifies the hospital’s status as a global leader in robotic cardiac care, a spokesperson said.
It has also broken new ground by performing robotic surgery on high-risk patients – children under 18, individuals with morbid obesity and those requiring redo surgery.
Feras Khaliel, consultant cardiovascular surgeon at KFSH&RC, said: ‘We are incredibly proud of our team who has participated in this success. Thanks to our cardiologists who keep referring patients to minimally invasive and robotic cardiac surgery approach.’
KFSH&RC has introduced innovative cardiac procedures, such as robotic multi-valve operations and robotic aortic valve replacements.
The Program’s proctoring and training initiatives in Germany, the US and other countries have enhanced the hospital’s international influence and expertise in robotic cardiac surgery.
For the second consecutive year, KFSH&RC has been ranked first in the Middle East and Africa and 20th globally in the world’s top 250 Academic Medical Centres. According to the 2024 Brand Finance rankings, it has also been recognised as the most valuable healthcare brand in the Kingdom and the Middle East.
