Surgeons remove 150 household items from man’s stomach

A 40-year-old man in India died following surgery to remove 150 household items from his stomach after he was admitted to hospital complaining of severe abdominal pain and nausea.

Items retrieved during the procedure included buttons, earphones, a zipper tag, safety pins, nuts, bolts, wires, thread, lockets, wrappers, hair clips, a marble, a chain of beads and various metallic objects.

Doctors ordered an ultrasound, which revealed the presence of foreign objects in his stomach. It is believed the patient suffered from the disorder ‘pica’

Despite the team’s efforts, the patient’s condition continued deteriorating
and he died after an extensive three-hour procedure to remove the bizarre assortment of objects.

The procedure was performed by medics at Medicity Hospital in Moga City, Punjab, and was led by Director Ajmer Singh Kalra, who described this case as ‘unprecedented’ and ‘unbelievable’.

The 40-year-old man sought medical attention at the hospital, complaining of persistent fever, stomach pain and nausea that had plagued him for nearly a month.

The patient’s family revealed that the man had been silently suffering from stomach issues for over two years, rarely mentioning his condition.

Despite consulting several local doctors, the cause of his abdominal distress remained elusive until his symptoms worsened significantly.
