Doctors in India have reported performing ‘miraculous surgery’ to save a teenager whose torso had been pierced by a 1.5ft long crowbar.
The 17-year-old had been removing damaged asbestos roof sheets during a primary school renovation when he slipped and fell on the crowbar on Saturday, April 1.
The following day, surgeons from MKCG Medical College and Hospital spent an hour removing the crowbar which had pierced the boy’s body near his pelvis and was stuck in his abdomen.
Assistant Professor Dr I Gopal, who was assisted in the procedure by Dr S P Jena, Dr J K Panigrahi, Dr B P Mohapatra and Dr Alok Das, told local media: “It was a critical operation since we had to remove the rod without causing any harm to other parts of the patient’s body.
“The patient is in ICU and has been extubated. His vitals are stable and he is doing well. We will take up definitive surgery once he recovers completely.”
The incident has been reported by a number of Indian publications, including The New Indian Express and India Narrative.
